My brother living with schizophrenia spent years warning me of monsters
inside everyone’s shadows…

This became the basis for the fantasy world in my upcoming book, made to visually represent the struggles inside people’s minds. I realized that these monsters reflect people’s trauma, fears, and mental health. And the only way to save my brother was to confront them.

For the last 20 years, I’ve chosen to care for my brother and to help others who live with serious mental illness.

When my brother said his shadows moved, and they were out to hurt us, and when his mental health continued worsening, I felt that I had no choice but to step into that Darkness with him.

I’ve since entered the worlds of many who struggle, from abuse to psychosis, involving myself in nonprofits and groups all over the world. A gap in understanding and empathy were prevalent wherever I went, so I decided to create content for people like us, and wrote this fantasy to show a new perspective on what it means to care.

Is an Ombra real?

Some believe they’re actual monsters from the spirit realm.

Professionals say they’re hallucinations or psychological symbols.

Yet, they’ve been seen throughout history, as djinn, ghosts, mythical beings.

One thing is recurring: they’re fixed to our mind and feed off trauma!

My answer is NO. I use them as an allegory to explore mental illness.

A black leather-bound book with gold ornate floral designs and the title 'The Curse of Ombra' embossed in gold on the cover.

In this book, you follow a high school dropout as he does everything in his power to save his brother living with schizophrenia, even if it means suffering enough to also see those monsters in people’s shadow that his brother spoke of.
